Allergy Adventures story time and picnic in Wendover Woods – 31st August

Summer is finally here so with true British optimism the next What Allergy? Allergy Support Group, brought to you with the support of The Anaphylaxis Campaign is going to be story time in Wendover Woods on Saturday 31st August.

I’m a big kid at heart myself so I can’t wait to relax and listen to some fun stories. The whole event is geared around food and allergens and giving kids with allergies the confidence to understand their own allergy and stay safe around food. The stories are fun with lots of hidden allergens hiding on every page for the kids to find. Allergies are really tough and can be scary but life and food should be enjoyed so we hope your kid will enjoy the stories and have a laugh with other kids with allergies whilst learning. Kids learn by play so teaching them how to keep safe, take control of their health, learn about their allergies and build more confidence in themselves is vital.

Start time: 11am – Allergy Adventures story time
Picnic: From 12 midday

Please arrive in plenty of time to park and bring some change as you do have to pay for parking.

So who are Allergy Adventures?

Allergy Adventures
Allergy Adventures started because an aunt knew she could put her creative design skills to the test, to create a magical world in a series of educational storybooks that would help her niece manage her allergy, but in a positive, fun and engaging way.

“There’s no doubt food allergies are serious, but I thought why can’t learning how to manage them be seriously good fun!” Allergy Adventures helps children with food allergies live safe, happy and healthy lives… filled with fun and adventure! Children will be thrilled to discover a magical world where exciting things happen inside a lunchbox! Our stories feature loveable characters, who go on all sorts of exciting adventures, discovering food they can eat and having lots of fun.

Allergy Adventures stories are packed with rhymes and fun activities like, hunting out tiny allergens on every page! The books can be used at home or in schools, to raise allergy awareness and promote safety around food. All stories are free from the top 14 allergens.

Books are also available to buy on Amazon

Picnic – please help us make it as safe as possible for everyone…

Please bring your own picnic lunch and blanket to sit on with you and please be very aware that we will be welcoming young people with a number and variety of allergies so we ask that you choose sensibly and keep the risks to others low.

We have kids attending with allergies to: Peanuts, dairy, eggs and gluten/wheat. We ask that you do not bring any loose nuts, dairy milk drinks or other products which can cause an airborne reaction in one of our young attendees. If you can avoid bring eggs or egg containing products too that would be great.

If you bring cakes or biscuits please make sure these are not left lying around, keep in a sealed container and check the child’s allergens before giving them anything you are not 100% sure about.

I might bring some oat flapjacks which will be freefrom all allergens – cooking skill dependent.

So how will you find us?

Wendover Woods is quite a big place but we’ll aim to set up our blankets on the grass near the Cafe in the Woods. We will have a large blue Fosters gazebo up for cover (as long as it’s not really windy).
Look out for the yellow Allergy Adventures colours and the what allergy logo.

Don’t worry if it’s really damp and rainy, the Cafe in the Woods have kindly offered us the use of the veranda as long as we buy some drinks and snacks. So if it’s pouring bring a bit of cash.

Please book and register your allergy

It would be really helpful to get an idea of how many are attending so if you want to come please email: with your name, how many kids and what allergies they have. I hope to circulate a list of all the allergens we hope our guests will avoid bringing, and if they must, eat it sensibly and away from children. Nuts and any milk drinks will be banned though due to airborne allergy problems and spillages.

I look forward to seeing you there.

If you are an adult with allergies who doesn’t have kids, please do come along too. I’m hoping to have two groups in the future, one for adults with allergies and one for parents of allergic kids because the issues, although similar arn’t entirely the same. And if you can’t face a kids’ story time picnic please email me to express interest in adult allergy events.

  1. This sounds so great, but too far for us 🙁

Hope it goes well though and if you feel like redoing in central London, let me know! 🙂

    • What a good idea – we could run these all across the country!

    • Well if you like this idea get in touch Allergy Adventures directly. They are running some similar events in London on 31st July at Wholefoods in London and also 14th August for Allergy Adventures Fact Find Hunt.
