This is probably my most exciting news to date; I am simply beyond excited about the new Allergy Today podcast that has just launched and so proud to be involved in setting it up.
The Allergy Today Podcast aims to normalise allergies, asthma, eczema and everything in between and provide a place for discussion and learning in a friendly, fun and bold way. The hosts are Quentin Howard, Alice Rose and me! Ruth Holroyd, and we have had so many laughs recording them so far.
Our first guest in episode one is Tania Ednan-Laperouse who is a little bit of an idol to me. I’m just in awe. I haven’t met Tania yet but I feel like I have. I just want to give her a huge cuddle and I’m not really a huggy person… She is an inspirational, brave, positive and pioneering woman. I hope you enjoy the first podcast where Tania talks about the tragic day she lost her daughter Natasha after she ate a Pret baguette containing undeclared sesame. Natasha then boarded a plane with her father, brother and best friend and that was when she became ill. Sadly the adrenaline injectors didn’t work and medical professionals were unable to save her life once the plane had landed.
It is incredible to see this family working so hard to raise awareness to prevent an accident like this happening again and new food allergen labelling laws have already been passed as a direct result of there campaigning.
I’m not allergic to spit
There is a very funny moment on the podcast were we discuss making a fuss in restaurants and sending food back if it contains allergens. Quentin said he’d rather not bother, in fear of having a chef spit in his food. And for some weird reason my instant response was…
“But I’m not allergic to spit, so that’s OK.”
No! not OK! Oh how we laughed. I think I was reasoning that nuts or milk in my meal would spell disaster but if my actions meant a chef was annoyed and spat in my food, that wouldn’t kill me. And I’d probably be none the wiser anyway. Obviously, if you spot me in your restaurant please don’t test my theory. I really don’t like spit in my food. Please don’t! Please tell me that’s an urban myth and chefs don’t do that..? gross!
So please listen to our first episode today. You can find Allergy Today wherever you get your podcasts. And if you enjoy what you hear, please rate and review us so can get even more people listening.

I’d love to hear from chefs, just to allay my now raging fears about spit in my food. And also anyone who has listened to our podcast. What can we do better? What do you want to hear more of? What did you think?
Micki Rose says
Good luck Ruth, go girl!
Ruth Holroyd says
Thanks Micki, it’s all very exciting, new, scary and fun. Hope you’re doing well.
Marlene Hochstrasser says
Hi Ruth unfortunately I could not link to your podcast. Re spit I suppose it depends on the food just eaten by the person who is spitting! Life just got more complex for the allergenic person! If you ever need a person to fill a slot on your podcast I would love to join in.
Kind regards
Marlene
Ruth Holroyd says
Hi Marlene, yes indeed, if the spittee has eaten nuts then I would definitely be allergic to it. Ewwww… horrible thought. What would your expert subject be? What would you really love to talk about? What keeps you up at night? And thanks so much for the heads up on the website, it appears to have crashed. We are working on fixing that. However you can search in itunes or spotify for Allergy Today and you should be able to find it.

Very interesting article Ruth! Loving your new venture, the interview with Tania will be amazing!
Hope you don’t mind me diagressing slightly…..
We are here in Palm Desert and I was thinking about you and the problems you had here. All was going well for me ; I’d been super careful with gf food.
Until last night when we did our usual visit to Village Fest and stopped for a caramel frappucino at Starbucks to cool down. Had it so many times before. But silly me didn’t think to check and guess they changed the supplier. Been all night….!!
Ruth Holroyd says
Aww ye gads! Hope you feel better soon. What was the ingredient that got you? It’s gluten you can’t have isn’t it? What’s that doing in a frappucino? And yes to listen, go to itunes or spotify or the podcast icon on your phone and search for Allergy Today. Podcasts are my new favourite thing. I love them. Hope you enjoy the rest of your visit to Palm Springs. And yes, I do have lovely memories of my holiday there and one very BAD MEMORY,., of the Broken Yolk nightmare and a muffin containing dairy they did not tell me about and them claimed they had told me about… Grrrrr
