whatallergy

This is what my latest dermatologist review letter This is what my latest dermatologist review letter says. My review date is 2 years time with the caveat I can contact him at any time should my skin condition worsen. He’s desperate for me to try Dupixent so that’s always an option for me, but I feel like I’ve improved enough now to not warrant that intervention.

Key wins 🥇
• He actually mentioned TSW. He’s always referred to it as worsening adult eczema in the past
• EASI score down to 5/72 (would be really interesting to track that score over my TSW journey. Basically the EASI score is a whole body skin health benchmarking tool
• 2 years follow up
• It also mentions that I used Balmonds tea tree cream to clear infection successfully @balmonds_skincare I did tell him about @lyonsleaf zinc cream too but that was a step too far 🤣

So pleased to be here now at 5.5 years TSW and to see a real change in the language used by my derm. This is really significant for future generations.

Change takes time but we’re getting there

I f**king love this Organic Balm from @obvs_skinca I f**king love this Organic Balm from @obvs_skincare , created by the incredibly talented @sian_louise_obvs
This tin of Organic Balm was #gifted #ad but I have been buying this now for years. If you love a bar soap check these out too. But back to the balm. Now in larger 100ml tins, this paraffin free alternative to #epaderm and #vaseline products is amazing.
Ingredients include: Butyrospermum parki, carthamus tincturius seed oil, maranta arundicaneae root powder, euphorbia cerifera triticum vulgare germ oil, tocopherol, 96% organic #vegan

Butyrospermum parkii (Shea Butter)*, Carthamus Tinctorius (Safflower) Seed Oil*, Maranta Arundinacea Root Powder (Arrowroot)*, Euphorbia cerifera cera (Candelilla Wax), Triticum Vulgare Germ Oil, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), *Organic

I wish i knew the Latin translations but I’ll share that in a bit. Seriously try this stuff, switch to paraffin free. Your skin will thank you.

❌❌Trigger warning ❌❌ I had another anaphyl ❌❌Trigger warning ❌❌
I had another anaphylactic reaction recently. I’m not ready to discuss what happened, where or how yet.
Still processing and trying to work it all out. Please know that I’m safe and fine now.
What I can say is that I think it was caused by my wheat allergy.
Previously I hadn’t realised wheat could give me an anaphylactic reaction. It had always seemed like a mild reaction in comparison to dairy, nuts and soya. When I say mild, I still mean ruined plans 💨🚽🧻💩💩
Blood and skin prick tests confirm I have a wheat allergy. This was only diagnosed later in life though.

What I learnt from this experience is that when I eat wheat (in this instance served despite requesting a wheat free meal ) that any reaction is very much delayed.
And not only that, anaphylaxis appears to be brought on by exercise quite a long time after eating.

When I had travelled all the way home from London, no reaction happened until I began walking home from the station.
Even walking constitutes as exercise. I had sped up a bit as I needed a wee 🫣 and honestly didn’t really realise anything was happening until my whole face was puffed up and my eyes swollen shut.
💉 I administered both epipens
📱 Phoned 999 and said ANAPHYLAXIS
Paramedics arrived within 7 minutes and were amazing. Huge thanks also to the hospital. The care was amazing and they even gave me an epipen and a prescription to replace the ones I’d used. This has never happened before.

It took me about 3 days to recover physically but emotionally I’m really shaken.
I’m doing ok, I’m anything but relentlessly positive and assessing how I cd do things differently next time.
But I used my @equal_eats card, went through my allergens with the server, checked the allergen menu yet STILL a mistake was made.

Is it ever really safe to eat out with life threatening allergies?
Anyone else get exercise induced delayed reaction wheat anaphylaxis?
I’d love to chat to someone else who has experienced this. It’s so confusing 🫤
Photos show 3 days healing

Just a quick healing happens slowly post. On the l Just a quick healing happens slowly post. On the left, during #tsw the backs of my knees were constantly like this. Bone deep itchy, flaking and irritated.
After 5 years #topicalsteroidwithdrawal the skin on the backs of my legs has never felt better. I think even the thin skin caused my topical steroid application is reversing.
Ask my dermatologist? “Oh you’re just growing out of your eczema…”
Mic drop 🎤
No, you’re wrong, I stood up against everything you told me and tried another way.
And you know what?
It’s paying off in so many ways.
I no longer put anything on my skin.
I no longer use tubs and tubs of paraffin emollient.
I use healing balms to spot treat inflammation, infection or split skin.
Less is more and listening to your skin screaming at you to help it heal.
That’s powerful.
I thank that terrified, lonely, lost girl leaping into the void, doing it anyway and trusting in the process EVERY GODDAMN DAY!
I did this! Look at that skin?

I will share links to blogs and other information about the things we’ve discussed here.
❤️‍🔥 NMT and moisturiser withdrawal
❤️‍🔥 Tips for getting the most out of your dermatology appointment
❤️‍🔥 How you can respond to gaslighting from a professional
❤️‍🔥 Red light therapy
❤️‍🔥 Cutting out paraffin emollients

It’s a lot!
But the best bits were, even tho I didn’t feel like he really understood, he had:
✔️ Read about TSW
✔️ Told me I now has mild eczema

The worst bit … “you’ve probably just grown out of your eczema.”
😡😡😡

Absolutely seething about that. Fuming!

🔍But we need dermatologists to SEE #topicalsteroidwithdrawal skin
🔍We need to be able to get a diagnosis
🔍 We need sensible and helpful support for those who have #tsw
🔍 We do not need to be gaslit

Dermatologists do better!
Do not get angry about what you see as silly girls on TikTok and social media - instead take a look at how your behaviour, your understanding of TSW and your attitude needs to change so we can all meet in the middle and talk about this stuff! It’s so important if we’re ever going to move forward and make positive progress

Topical steroid withdrawal is a condition caused by steroids

Medical professionals rarely, if ever, acknowledge it and continued to prescribe steroids to those showing signs of TSW

If you’re using steroids for any reason, please look into #topicalsteroidwithdrawal as it is a PREVENTABLE drug withdrawal

Thank you so much to those who sent in clips and photos to be part of the continued advocacy we do as a community 💖

It’s been YEARS since I last saw my dermatologis It’s been YEARS since I last saw my dermatologist. I cancelled my last appointment because my skin was HORRIBLE!
But Friday I will be going to a talk to him. Probably to get discharged
But I wanted him to see #tsw
He has seen me throughout my #topicalsteroidwithdrawal journey.

💩He has gaslit me,
✋🏻walked out when I’ve been speaking.
👍🏻He has also offered me options, including UVB, patch tests, Methotrexate and Dupixent.
📖 He has a copy of my poetry book The Shape of Skin with the dermatologist poems bookmarked 🫣

Let’s see how it goes.
I just want him to see that I have been able to achieve quite significant skin freedom. I no longer cost the NHS as much (still need asthma inhalers) and save myself a fortune on the weekly tubs of Epaderm I was getting through.

Any suggestions of things i should ask?
I will share the latest study regarding #berberine to speed TSW healing. It’s very promising.
I will also ask him about #redlighttherapy

But what else?
I’ll let you all know how it goes.

A poem for you about how your scars, wrinkles, tra A poem for you about how your scars, wrinkles, trauma and damage all make you who you are. It was inspired by the Japanese art of Kitsugi or “golden joinery”. The place great value on things that they have mended and put back together, instead of seeing something as just worthless and throwing it away. It really moved me and these pots are absolutely beautiful.

I’m here to tell you SO ARE YOU!
You are beautiful and worthy and lovable even when you don’t feel like it ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹

You know your skin better than anyone. 📖 Do as You know your skin better than anyone.
📖 Do as much research as you can
🔗Trust your instincts - by all means try new things but learn too that if we tried everything we were recommended we’d be broke and still not get better. Learn healthy boundaries and when to say no thank you. I’m comfortable with my healing journey.
🛌 Rest and restoration are so fundamental to healing. Annoyingly TSW can also seriously affect sleep patterns so grab rest where you can. Tune into that para sympathetic nerve and do things that lower your heart rate
🏃‍♀️ Exercise as much as you can. If you can’t then don’t. Just restorative yoga or yin yoga can be wonderfully calming. I know when I can run and get my skin sweating it improves. But today I needed a lie in and to rest
❤️‍🩹 Find your people - this community keeps me sane and honestly you guys give me so much support. You know who you are x
But most importantly YOU DO YOU! If Dead Sea salt baths help - have them! For me they massively reduce inflammation and do not dry out my skin - we are all different so find what works for you.
If you want to moisturise because your skin is just so painful? Do it! But please do explore alternatives to paraffin emollients because i definitely went through a withdrawal response when I stopped using them.

❤️‍🩹And if you cannot go through the ravages of #tsw then that’s ok too. This isn’t for everyone. There are alternative treatments, they didn’t work for me but they did give some relief for 9 months. #topicalsteroidwithdrawal will ruin your life initially but I hope our future selves will thank us

Hello, I’m Ruth, author and blogger

Ruth

Hi I'm Ruth. I've grown up with eczema and multiple life-threatening allergies and collected more as I've got older.  It started with a peanut allergy and now I'm allergic to milk, wheat, soya and many more. In this blog I share tips, advice and things I've learnt living with allergies, asthma and eczema with a focus on topical steroid withdrawal. You can buy my books, which are brilliant by the way! The first is Anaphylaxis: The essential guide and the second, The Shape of Skin, healing poems for eczema and sensitive skin. The reviews speak for themselves. If you want to chat you can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (links below). Do get in touch. And please comment on blogs, it makes a humble blogger do a little happy dance!
