Finally I’ve finished my second book. It’s taken me a lifetime to write this collection of poetry for everyone with eczema, topical steroid withdrawal and atopic dermatitis and I’m thrilled with it.
I am so proud of this achievement. Written, edited, proofed and prepared during a pandemic and going through topical steroid withdrawal at the same time. I absolutely adore the front cover and the illustrations my nieces have done for me, which you’ll find with some of the poems inside the book.
The books takes you on a journey from childhood eczema, through to the dark days, thinking I was going to always have eczema, never heal and never find happiness. There are so many things I could say here about how much poetry has helped me heal. It’s been my therapy and through all the hard days and nights I’ve found a way to love my skin and to see beauty in small victories.
I hope you enjoy reading these poems. I wanted to give hope to those living with this life limiting condition. It’s hard, but there can be a way to live a better life, without topical steroids.
It will also give those caring for someone with eczema an insight into the shame, guilt and loathing we feel. The pain when you tell us off, tell us stop scratching, or offer us advice. Sometimes all we need is for someone to hear us, listen to us, see us and hold us while we cry.
If you love words, poetry and reading, this book is a must read! I hope you love it and look forward to hearing your thoughts. I’m going through that familiar fear that no one will buy it and everyone will hate it… but it’s out there now and I hope it will bring solace, a hand to hold yours through this journey and a friend to share with. You are not alone!
