Gluten free fish finger sandwiches – a great way to start the day

29/03/2012 by Ruth Holroyd 2 Comments

My allergy free discovery this week has got to be Sainsbury’s gluten free and dairy free fish fingers.

Feel good gluten free treat - free from fish fingers
After a long train journey, standing all the way into London, balancing my coffee in one hand, and book (The Help by Kathryn Stockett) in the other, this was one of those eureka moments.

How come I’ve I never found these before?

They’ve been around for ages aparently.

I suppose since I’ve always been able to tolerate gluten in the past I didn’t need to search these out as many fish finger brands are dairy free these days.

Recent stomach cramps and constipation (enough detail about that) have led me to avoid the dreaded gluten and wheat for a month or so to see if things improve. It’s hard work avoiding gluten! I had forgotten just how hard, so products like this, which would also be great for the kid’s tea, are a god send. Thank you Sainsbury’s!

In case you’re wondering exactly what’s in them…

Sainsbury’s gluten and dairy free fish fingers ingredients: MSC Certified Pacific Cod (65%); Batter; Crumb Coating; Palm Oil.Batter contains: Cornflour, Maize Starch, Water, Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Mustard Powder, White Pepper, Stabiliser: Xanthan Gum; Colour: Paprika Extract.Crumb coating contains: Rice Flour, Dried Potato, Salt, Emulsifier: Mono- and Diglycerides of Fatty Acids.

The reason for my visit to London was to join Sainsbury’s free from and nutrition team for a gluten free bloggers brunch. It was great to get to know the Sainsbury’s team, their range of products (which I was not fully aware of) and to also network with other like minded coeliacs and allergics like myself.

You tend to get stuck into a routine, a bit of a rut, buying and cooking the same things week in week out, so it’s brilliant to have events like these to share new products, exchange views on our favourite foods and recipes etc. I can’t think of a better way to do this than over a fish finger sandwich and a mug of nice, hot, black coffee.

I have been in love with Sainsbury’s ever since they sent me a box of freefrom stuff to review (review still pending – sorry Sainsbury’s, house renovations and work getting in the way… it is imminent, I promise…) whilst our building work was going on and we had no oven or kitchen to speak of. The breakfast chocolate brioche, bread, cakes and biscuits were just what the doctor ordered. They actually nearly made me cry, they arrived just at the right time, when builders and tradesmen were crawling everywhere. It was a dusty, horrible time, so a belated thanks to Sainsbury’s for that.

I’ve been buying all the things you sent me now for months and they are all very tasty.

Too tasty – can I say that? My husband, who can eat EVERYTHING, the lucky swine, keeps nicking the free from stuff! It used to be too disgusting for him to bother, but now, nothing is safe! What are we to do? I never used to have to share my ‘special food’ but those times are changing. Good times overall I say. I feel like a child again, learning that I must share my toys. But I don’t want to!

To round off a lovely, sunny, friend filled and freefrom packed day Sainsbury’s also gave us all a goody bag stuffed full with freefrom goodies.

You can just see the yellow wrapping around the freefrom allergen free Easter egg – shall I save it till Easter? Its days are numbered…

As well as catching up with bloggers I had already met, including Cressida from FoodsMatter, Gluten Free Mrs D and Lucy Nixon of the FreeFromBlog I also met some new bloggers. Check out The Fussy Foodie blog, GlutenFree(k), Neandra Etienne of The Collective Review and last, but by no means least, Beatiful, Active, Nourished.

I can’t wait to go shopping with my new Sainsbury’s Free From bag for life. Thanks to everyone at Sainsbury’s for a great event. I’m expecting big things now… no pressure then!

Oh and on the way out, in the Sainsbury’s foyer, I (very briefly) met Tom Pellereau of Apprentice fame and the curved nail file inventor; I managed to blag myself a free one! Oh, OK, everyone got a free nail file, bit I was chuffed with mine.

My dad has coeliac disease and he loves the gluten free fish fingers. Fish fingers are his comfort food and it was one of the foods he was most likely to miss when he was diagnosed so he was thrilled when we found gluten free ones!

They are delicious and cook really well, often a problem even with the normal ones where the breadcrumb coating just disintegrates. Glad he likes them! I am craving them now so planning an internet order later. That’ll cheer me up!
