Copenhagen with allergies – holiday tips and eating out

19/06/2014 by Ruth Holroyd 5 Comments

Ravage Restaurant in Copenhagen - magnificent steak gluten, dairy and nut free

Anyone with allergies or coeliac disease planning to visit Copenhagen or anywhere in Denmark should find it pleasantly surprising. There are quite a high number of people with allergies in Denmark and restaurants seemed very used to being asked to cater for allergies. Everywhere we went all the food was local, fresh and in-season so it was easier for meals to be prepared … [Read more...]

What you need to know about nut allergy in France

27/08/2013 by Ruth Holroyd 11 Comments

Did you know that the french don't really have one word in their vocabulary for nuts? Many people mistakenly think the word noix or noisettes is the word for nuts. Indeed this might be just the word you're looking for if you're allergic to certain types of nuts only, but if you're allergic to peanuts or all nuts you need to use a completely different phrase and approach in … [Read more...]

Surviving in a dusty youth hostel – allergen alert!

05/04/2012 by Ruth Holroyd Leave a Comment

Label your cubby hole in the youth hostel

Youth hostelling can afford you the freedom to stay somewhere relatively cheaply with the option of self catering facilities. They often have fantastic locations, by a lake, in the middle of nowhere, but be warned, the accommodation can be spartan to say the least. If you like a bit luxury and peace a quiet, this isn't the option for you. There were quite a few families with … [Read more...]

Allergic to holidays?

28/10/2011 by Ruth Holroyd 2 Comments

sun, sea, beech

Going on holiday should be fun, long awaited, planned carefully etc. etc. Do you find that when you go away to a new country that your skin flares up and your body goes into some kind of spin making everything hyper sensitive? This happens to me every time I go away, so now I'm beginning to get a bit paranoid. What's causing all my problems? What can I do to stop it? I have … [Read more...]

Avoiding allergic reactions at spa hotels

spa day

Preparing for any day out when you have allergies is a bit like a military operation. The necessary drugs, inhalers, Action Plan and EpiPen must all be ready, as well as snacks, perhaps even sandwiches or a meal and your fully charged mobile phone, should you need to use it in an emergency. Make sure you always wear a medical necklace or bracelet, but especially on a day … [Read more...]

Hello, I’m Ruth, author and blogger

Ruth

Hi I'm Ruth. I've grown up with eczema and multiple life-threatening allergies and collected more as I've got older.  It started with a peanut allergy and now I'm allergic to milk, wheat, soya and many more. In this blog I share tips, advice and things I've learnt living with allergies, asthma and eczema with a focus on topical steroid withdrawal. You can buy my books, which are brilliant by the way! The first is Anaphylaxis: The essential guide and the second, The Shape of Skin, healing poems for eczema and sensitive skin. The reviews speak for themselves. If you want to chat you can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (links below). Do get in touch. And please comment on blogs, it makes a humble blogger do a little happy dance!
