Haggis may contain nutmeg, mace and coriander

24/01/2013 by Ruth Holroyd 2 Comments

With Burn's Night fast approaching and the Haggis sleeping quietly in the fridge you might want to consider whether the supper is safe for you and how to create an allergy safe meal of haggis, neeps and tatties. A Burns supper is a celebration of the life and poetry of the poet Robert Burns, author of many Scots poems and one of my favourites, just because of the language and … [Read more...]

Friends will make mistakes just like you do!

14/02/2012 by Ruth Holroyd 8 Comments

They don't mean to but your friends may make mistakes where catering for your allergies are concerned. After all, we're all human, we all make mistakes sometimes, and if you're capable of slipping up and eating the wrong thing, not checking enough in restaurants or just being a bit blase, then your friends might too. Many things are just habit, like stiring tea with the same … [Read more...]

Champneys restaurant gets the thumbs up!

09/09/2011 by Ruth Holroyd 2 Comments

Imagine walking around a posh restaurant and gazing at all the fresh, healthy options available, noting which you can and can't eat by reading the GF, DF, NF notes with full ingredients and information on fat, salt and sugar content. It doesn't happen in many restaraunts - the onous is usually on you, the customer, to ascertain if a meal contains a certain allergen or … [Read more...]

Sheila’s Cottage restaurant in Ambleside – great with allergies!

08/09/2011 by Ruth Holroyd Leave a Comment

Having just returned from a week's exhausting but fun holiday in the Lakes I thought I'd share with you a lovely little restaurant that we discovered which was absolutely fabulous. After the usual scanning of the website, phonecall to guage whether they can cater for someone with serious life threatening food allergies, and then family checks that the EpiPen is in fact in my … [Read more...]

Nando’s get top marks for allergy awareness

19/07/2011 by Ruth Holroyd 4 Comments

I'm sure most of you have heard of Nando's, and probably most of you have been to one too. If you haven't they do Portugeuse style peri-peri flame-grilled chicken; it's great for families and groups because you can order as little or as much as you want and share. They also do bottomless drinks or tap water if you're watching the pennies and you can help yourself. I've been … [Read more...]

Hello, I’m Ruth, author and blogger

Ruth

Hi I'm Ruth. I've grown up with eczema and multiple life-threatening allergies and collected more as I've got older.  It started with a peanut allergy and now I'm allergic to milk, wheat, soya and many more. In this blog I share tips, advice and things I've learnt living with allergies, asthma and eczema with a focus on topical steroid withdrawal. You can buy my books, which are brilliant by the way! The first is Anaphylaxis: The essential guide and the second, The Shape of Skin, healing poems for eczema and sensitive skin. The reviews speak for themselves. If you want to chat you can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (links below). Do get in touch. And please comment on blogs, it makes a humble blogger do a little happy dance!
