Sheila’s Cottage restaurant in Ambleside – great with allergies!

Having just returned from a week’s exhausting but fun holiday in the Lakes I thought I’d share with you a lovely little restaurant that we discovered which was absolutely fabulous.

After the usual scanning of the website, phonecall to guage whether they can cater for someone with serious life threatening food allergies, and then family checks that the EpiPen is in fact in my bag, we set off.

It’s always just a little worrying and unerving when eating out somewhere for the first time, and in fact eating out anywhere. Never relax and assume something is alright – always ask and always check. Make sure staff know the seriousness of your allergy.

But just once in a while a restaurant will serve you something so tasty you’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven. It won’t be bland, dry with no sauce, or slightly boring. No, it will be just as amazing and well presented and tasty as everyone elses meal.

It was such a treat not to order ‘ham, egg and chips’ or steak, or a nice salad like I normally do – just to avoid being difficult and having to risk eating something I’m not sure about.

The Tuna with prawns, garlic and chilli was so tasty I could have eaten another one. Top marks to Sheila’s Cottage. We all had a lovely meal, especially me with the allergies so thanks so much for being so accommodating.

If you’d like to find out more about Sheila’s Cottage visit and check out their menu.

Have you discovered any hidden gems whilst on holiday? Any really amazing little restaurants who bend over backwards to make you feel at home, safe and assured that your meal is important and will be free from allergens? I’d love to hear about other great places to eat out. They seem to be few and far between but they are out there. Thanks to all the staff at Sheila’s!
