This week is National Food Allergy and Intolerance Week (25 – 29 January). Organised by Allergy UK, the aim is to raise awareness of allergies and intolerance in the UK. An estimated 1-2% of adults and 5-6% of children suffer from potential fatal food allergies. That is over 1.5 million people in the UK. Approximately 45% of the population suffer from food intolerance; whilst not life threatening, food intolerances can make all aspects of life very uncomfortable for sufferers. Keep up the good work Allergy UK. To find out more visit their website at: www.allergyuk.org.

I always regret that Food Allergy and Intolerance Week does not receive the publicity it deserves. I noted that this year it was sponsored by Sainsbury . I visited many stores in my area and found that none of them including their pharmacy departments had any knowledge of this. What a missed opportunity. I know, I’ve heard very little about it and only found out about it myself because someone from Allergy UK left me a message to ask me if I would speak to a journalist. Unfortunately they found someone else before I phoned back so I didn’t even get to do my own rant. What do you do at the Devon Allergy Clinic? Whereabouts in Devon? I’m in Newton abbot this weekend.
