These are Sainsbury’s own brand and I think they are a copy of the branded Frazzles crisps that I remember from childhood. They are bacon flavoured maize snacks so no good for anyone who can’t tolerate corn either. They are shaped like little bits of streaky bacon and just melt in your mouth.
Sainsbury’s Bacon crispies ingredients:
Maize; Rice Flour; Sunflower Oil; Bacon Flavour; Dried Potato; Beetroot Juice; Rice Flour, Maize, Sunflower Oil, Dried Potato, Yeast Powder, Salt, Sugar, Yeast Extract, Colours: Beetroot Red, Paprika Extract; Flavourings, Caster Sugar, Acid: Citric Acid.
So here we see a bacon crisp which hasn’t seen meat in its life. It even says suitable for vegetarians and vegans on the front of the packet; I’ve never understood why a vegetarian would want to eat bacon flavoured snacks? How is it vegan if it contains dairy?
Compared with the original Smiths Frazzles
Ingredients: Maize, Vegetable Oil, Bacon Flavour [{lactose from milk}, Flavour Enhancers {Monosodium Glutamate, disodium 5′-ribonucleotide}, Wheat Flour, Yeast Extract {from barley}, Rusk {from wheat}, Whey Powder {from milk}, Hydrolysed Soya Protein, Flavourings], Colours {Paprika Extract, Beetroot Red}, Salt, Potassium Chloride.
You can see here that Frazzles contain dairy and MSG.
I have to say I was amazed that I could eat these Sainsburys Bacon crispies. Much to the husbands’ dismay, who bought them for himself not knowing I would be able to eat them; my trying one crisp turned into scoffing three packets – well, they’re only tiny packets…
Usually I avoid all processed foods, but once in a while something like this is a real treat with a glass of beer in the evening in front of the TV.

I used to love bacon crispies but sainsburys seems to have gone on one if its “improved recipe” campaigns and absaloutly messed up, they are horrible and all you can taste is black pepper.
Ruth says
Oh no! Haven’t had these for a while… try Co-ops brand. I think they’re OK too. (Must check that)

I just bought Sainsbury bacon crispies and it says the Bacon Flavour contains rice flour not wheat flour.
Ruth Holroyd says
Brilliant! Yes you’re right! They’re OK for everyone now
Sue says
So do these have dairy product in them or not? My friend is a vegan and I had been going to suggest these in a sandwhich
Ruth Holroyd says
If I ate them then they are dairy free but the packaging would say. Whether they are truly vegan being called bacon crispies I wouldn’t like to say…
lindsay teague says
The packaging says ‘vegan’ now (24th Aug 2018)
not sure theyre gluten free – it doesnt list any allergens but doesnt say gluten free either..
Ruth Holroyd says
Ha Ha… vegan bacon crispies. That’s really weird as a concept to me. But they are tasty. It’s so tricky to know what’s safe isn’t it? They have no gluten containing ingredients I guess. I would probably eat them… and I’m allergic to wheat and dairy.
