Scared to eat out after lockdown?

01/05/2021 by Ruth Holroyd 2 Comments

You are not alone. I’m really feeling the anxiety building and that’s OK. It’s a good thing actually because it keeps me vigilant and alert. After too many mistakes when eating out, all caused by poor communication, lack of training, awareness and knowledge of the seriousness of allergies, I’m always a little nervous

Having not had to worry about my allergies apart from double checking food labels for over a year, it’s going to a big mind shift for all us with life threatening allergies.

I wrote a guide to getting back out there as a guest blog for the lovely Lindiwe at The Allergy Table blog. Do follow her for amazing recipes, a positive attitude and tireless allergy advocacy.

Check out How, When, Where, Who, Why, When WHAT ALLERGY? here for my tips of how to get back out there eating at cafes, pubs and restaurants as things return to some kind of normal.

Are you ready? Are you scared? What are you doing today to help you control your anxiety and prepare for eating out again? I’d love to hear from you.

Hi Ruth, I have always had a fear of eating out due to having multiple allergies and intolerances to most natural things and also to meats all seafood and all fish except for cod evenso that’s only in small amounts, but by far and away my worst is perfume on any form as you never know if someone is already there or worse comes in afterwards as there is usually only 1 way in or out and as an attack happens almost instantly and then most times off to A&E so I have now given up eating out or collecting it so in a way I’m thankful for delivery services and not being allowed out. Sorry it was more a letter than a comment hope you are well kind regards Ian

Having a perfume allergy must be so difficult. Your home is the only completely safe place for you and possibly outdoor eating like picnic and garden parties. What is your favourite delivery food company? I’ve personally never ordered takeout since getting serious anaphylaxis. I just feel that this too is too much of a risk for me… I have a massive lack of trust with that extra distance between restaurant and customer. Stay safe! Stay at home! I’m very thankful I don’t have a perfume allergy although sometimes I do find some perfumes very unpleasant and pungent and want to get away. I don’t wear any myself. I smell just wonderful without 😉 Thanks so much for your comment.

Hello, I’m Ruth, author and blogger

Ruth

Hi I'm Ruth. I've grown up with eczema and multiple life-threatening allergies and collected more as I've got older.  It started with a peanut allergy and now I'm allergic to milk, wheat, soya and many more. In this blog I share tips, advice and things I've learnt living with allergies, asthma and eczema with a focus on topical steroid withdrawal. You can buy my books, which are brilliant by the way! The first is Anaphylaxis: The essential guide and the second, The Shape of Skin, healing poems for eczema and sensitive skin. The reviews speak for themselves. If you want to chat you can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (links below). Do get in touch. And please comment on blogs, it makes a humble blogger do a little happy dance!
