14/12/2020 by Ruth Holroyd 5 Comments

Sarah at her allergy test appointment

Imagine having allergic reactions and not knowing what's causing them? Imagine these reactions are so bad that you are prescribed an adrenaline injector but you're still not 100% sure what has been causing these reactions. Sounds a bit scary right? This is Sarah's story. She has just had another anaphylactic reaction and still doesn't know what's causing it! This is … [Read more...]

Almond allergy #101

almond milk

I lived my whole life thinking I was allergic to almonds but never quite knowing for sure. I knew I'd been exposed to them by mistake in a snack bar years ago which contained nibbed almonds and I didn't react. At the time I continued to avoid them because I was too scared to risk it and worrying about cross contamination. Allergy blood tests recently confirmed - I am not … [Read more...]

This product alert today just goes to consolidate that fear. MULTIPLE RETAILERS - Ground Almonds - peanut traces warning If you … [Read more...]

Should you eat almonds if you have a nut allergy?

almonds in hand

So, the peanut and nut allergy may not extend to almonds, blood tests show very low percentages for both almonds and coconut. I can eat coconut no problem, I love the stuff! Praise be for Coconut milk and Thai curries. But I've always avoided almonds under the blanket "You're allergic to all nuts!" banner from the doctor. Accidental almond consumption I know I have eaten … [Read more...]

Bird’s Custard powder invented because of egg allergy!

17/02/2012 by Ruth Holroyd 14 Comments

Today I thought I'd share a bit of food fact fun. Did you know that Bird's Custard, first invented way back in 1837 by Alfred Bird, came about because his wife could not eat the traditional custard which was made with eggs because she had an egg allergy? Useless fact number one, you never know when that might come up at the pub quiz. Over the years the company has been taken … [Read more...]

Hello, I’m Ruth, author and blogger

Ruth

Hi I'm Ruth. I've grown up with eczema and multiple life-threatening allergies and collected more as I've got older.  It started with a peanut allergy and now I'm allergic to milk, wheat, soya and many more. In this blog I share tips, advice and things I've learnt living with allergies, asthma and eczema with a focus on topical steroid withdrawal. You can buy my books, which are brilliant by the way! The first is Anaphylaxis: The essential guide and the second, The Shape of Skin, healing poems for eczema and sensitive skin. The reviews speak for themselves. If you want to chat you can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (links below). Do get in touch. And please comment on blogs, it makes a humble blogger do a little happy dance!
