Comparing gluten free bread – which is the healthiest?

01/11/2013 by Ruth Holroyd 5 Comments

Genius bread with hole

Ever wondered just how healthy gluten free bread is and how the different brands compare with each other. They have all improved their fat and calorie content recently but how does it compare to a normal 400g loaf and what's the difference between the many gluten free loaves now on the market. Calories per slice are about a third higher for the gluten free bread. Fat … [Read more...]

Eggy genius bread with a dash of chilli flakes

This month I have ilumi and my friends to thank for an amazing alfesco dining experience; I had ilumi cardamom chicken with brown rice and they had fajitas. Dee cooked the rice. All I had to do was snip open the pouch, pour it into a pan and heat. Delicious. And instead of the normal comments you get about freefrom food like, "Shame you can't have the sauce... or I would hate … [Read more...]

Genius freefrom (gluten, wheat, dairy) fish pie – tested

11/06/2013 by Ruth Holroyd Leave a Comment

One the meals you can adapt quite easily for a freefrom diet is a fish pie. You can actually make one without the white sauce if you use baked beans, or just have a slightly drier pie. Husband-who-can-eat-anything has mastered the technique of making a roux with dairy free milk and it works rather well. I'm always on the look out for healthier and different recipes and … [Read more...]

There’s a hole in my bread, dear Genius, dear Genius

Genius bread with hole

Now we all know that gluten free bread has come a very long way since those first sprouted loaves we tried so hard to eat and the shrink wrapped delicacies which had use-by-dates months in the future. We're now spoilt for choice, and even when sometimes your gluten free loaf has a hole, it's such a pretty hole, you don't really mind so much. It almost looks like a mouse hole … [Read more...]

Hello, I’m Ruth, author and blogger

Ruth

Hi I'm Ruth. I've grown up with eczema and multiple life-threatening allergies and collected more as I've got older.  It started with a peanut allergy and now I'm allergic to milk, wheat, soya and many more. In this blog I share tips, advice and things I've learnt living with allergies, asthma and eczema with a focus on topical steroid withdrawal. You can buy my books, which are brilliant by the way! The first is Anaphylaxis: The essential guide and the second, The Shape of Skin, healing poems for eczema and sensitive skin. The reviews speak for themselves. If you want to chat you can find me on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn (links below). Do get in touch. And please comment on blogs, it makes a humble blogger do a little happy dance!
