Now we all know that gluten free bread has come a very long way since those first sprouted loaves we tried so hard to eat and the shrink wrapped delicacies which had use-by-dates months in the future.
We’re now spoilt for choice, and even when sometimes your gluten free loaf has a hole, it’s such a pretty hole, you don’t really mind so much.
It almost looks like a mouse hole in the skirting board.
What interests me is, which is your favourite gluten free bread?
Are you loyal? and stick to the same brand?
or do you stock pile whathever is available when you see it, like me?
I alternate between Warburtons, which is available in my local Budgens, always in stock, always plenty on the shelves and I feel I should support them so that they do keep stocking it.
Genius, when I can find it, which just gets better and better.
But I also like Fria, Sainsbury’s GF bread and M&S – when there is any on the shelves!
You have to learn to treat gluten free bread more carefully than eggs – make sure it’s right at the top of the bag or else it’s in a sorry state when you get home.
So, a quick poll. Which is your favourite?

I’m really enjoying the new Fria gluten free bread and other baked products. They are gorgeous. As you say, gluten free bread has come a very very long way since I first used to buy the very expensive, brick like versions that just broke into crumbs as you cut them. Sandwiches were impossible, but not anymore. I think Fria Grova Dark Gluten Free Sliced Loaf is my no 1 at the moment (http://www.goodnessdirect.co.uk/cgi-local/frameset/detail/428011_Fria_Grova__Dark_Sliced_Loaf_500g.html) followed by the poppy seed rolls, but as a brand Genius is a close second.

Fria are really good, so tasty. I’m really sad at the moment though as I have begun to have a new problem. It’s to do with wheat. If I eat any wheat I suddenly become incredibly bloated, and I mean REALLY bloated and also get terrible stomach cramps, wind, the lot. Charming! Really, it is. I’m having some tests done but I am very worried I may suddenly have a problem with wheat. Last time I had a Fria loaf it didn’t agree with me, and when I checked the ingredients, whilst it’s gluten free, it does have wheat in it. Could be totally unrelated so must do further tests, but why does this happen? I’ve been fine with wheat, and suddenly.. bam. I have always had mild IBS. Anyway. Hey Ho. If it is the wheat I will have to write to Fria and beg them reconsider the wheat starch 🙂

Gluten is the protein in wheat, Soy, Barley. If it had wheat in it it had gluten. You could be a coeliac. Same thing happened to me and I was diagnosed with Coeoliac’s disease (you can have it for years with no symptoms and suddenly it’s triggered- doctors don’t know much about it- it can’t be cured, just managed) . That sounds frightening but it just means a lifestyle change, cutting all wheat out of your diet. The trouble is you need calcium supplements and guess what they cause in every 1000 people?Yep- bloating! Back to square one for me….

My favourite used to be the seeded Genius then it suddenly started giving me stomach pains after eating it. I know the recipe was changed for the white & brown but I don’t know if they did with the seeded. I now eat tesco free from, white uncut being my favourite, it’s soft & stays fresh for days. Also worth a mention is the bread from wheatfreebakery direct, they have some loaves that are egg, milk & soya free too 🙂

DS make a great white loaf and with all my other food and nut allergies its the best.It toasts well and tends to not crumble when you fill it.

Thanks Brian – I have some vouchers for DS so I will try that one. A friend of mine says Artisan bread is good too. Available online. Anyone tried it? http://www.artisanbread-abo.com/
MiaBlue says
I have tried the artisan but have to say that DS is absolutely a fave! the bread rolls and loaves are nice to taste, dont crumble and are good untoasted or toasted. I use ds rolls and bread on my severely allergic (wheat/Gluten/Dairy and Egg) two year old and he has taken to them very well

Just bought some DS chiabatta – cant wait to try it

Does anyone care about the additives in the bread you eat?
Did you know that the World Health Organisation has set safe levels for Xanthan gum for food and as a laxative?
Do you care about the hidden ingredients?
Just wondering if this is important to you as we don’t use any of these in our bread.
Or do you just care what it tastes like?
Do you try another bread if the one you tried is not to your liking?
Did you know we use 7 different grains and pulses and that each bread tastes different?
We do sell a taster box so you can find your favourite.

Hi Ingrid, yes I do care, a lot. This is very old blog post. Since writing this I have become an advocate of proper rye bread and all your ABO breads. circumstances have stopped my buying them recently but I am shortly to be buying a small house all of my own so I will have a Freezer and will be able to stock up again. I can’t wait! I might try the taster box… be adventurous…
