Ever walked around a health food shop or pharmacy picking up supplements and vitamins only to find they nearly all contain dairy and/or wheat/corn etc.? They probably also contain weird and wonderful fillers and things you’ve never heard of before. Are they really good for you?
Not great for those with allergies to dairy or grains. A reader asked me this week if I knew of a folic acid she could take as she’s planning to start a family but she also can’t have lactic acid and wheat and has a chemical sensitivity.
You’d think it would be easy to find but the ingredients lists on a few I looked at were vast.
So I asked my friend Micki of Truly Gluten Free because she knows everything. Indeed she came up with a few good suggestions.
Biocare do a liquid one. The only ingredients are: purified water, preservatives (sodium carbonate), folic acid.
Another might be Kirkman’s.
Not so easy to get hold of but Nutricentre, Natural Dispensary or Mandimart should be able to get it.
Both are confirmed TGF safe so no dairy, grains etc.
Thank you to Jess for asking the question and to Micki for recommending some safe products for Jess to use.
Always, always read the ingredients lists of any vitamins, minerals, supplements or drugs.
Despite having a life threatening allergy to dairy I am frequently prescribed drugs that contain lactose.
It’s often hard to find one that doesn’t! Most anti-histamines contain lactose so be careful.
Check with your doctor or pharmacists as they should be able to source something and if in doubt visit one of us clever bloggers to see if we have the answer. Anyone else recommend a safe folic acid?

Is there an equalivant folic acid tablet that does not contain lactose.

There definitely is. I’ve been taking some during my time on methotrexate which I was being prescribed by my doctor. I also found some vegan ones on Amazon… or you could try this link https://www.rosemontpharma.com/products/nutrition-blood/folic-acid-oral-solution
